Holiday mix CD 2010
So this is my first blog entry through this Time Capsule device, and if it's going to be my last you'll never know. Because of all this, I've decided to be a little festive, and steal an idea from the fabulous Tim and do a mix CD. This however will be more holiday related, so if you are all bah humbug you'll have to deal with it. The songs are not in any kind of order as to which one I like the best, although you can imagine about the first one on the list.
1. Kylie Minogue - Let it Snow
This is a new recording from Miss K and I think it's fair to say that it's pretty damn good. I first heard of it on Twitter, and then before long it was available on iTunes bundled with her delightful cover of Santa Baby (performed live at the tree lighting ceremony in NYs Rockerfeller Center 2010).
2. Mel & Kim - Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree
This is, to me, a classic. Probably one of the first contemporary Christmas classics I liked. It's fun, it's catchy, the video is hilarious and I liked Kim Wilde. I have memories of dancing around the Christmas tree in our hall to this song wearing a pair of grey leggings and an oversized red jumper. Good times!
Some might prefer the lovely Brenda Lee version to this though. I like that too.
3. Shakin' Stevens - Merry Christmas Everyone
To be honest, I had never heard this one before last year. I own quite a few Christmas albums and how this didn't make it onto any of them is just shocking! Outrageous!
How great is this!
4. Bing Crosby - White Christmas
This is probably THE Christmas classic. I adore this, and it shouldn't be covered because nothing will ever come even remotely close to it. We'eve always heard this at my parents house at Christmas. I even bought the movie White Christmas because of it. This is the essense of Christmas. Funniely enough, it looks like it'll be a white Christmas again this year.
5. Ove Sprogø - Når Du Ser Et Stjerneskud (When You Wish Upon a Star)
The Danish version of Jiminy Cricket (Jesper Fårekylling) When You Wish Upon a Star that features in the Disney From All of Us to All of You show. It's not Christmas eve before you've heard (and seen) this. They show it every year and evil bro and I used to sit and watch it with our crazy aunt. When that song came on, we knew it was not long before the big feast and then it would be time to dance around the tree and get our presents.
Sing along now. Come on everyone!
6. Nat King Cole feat. Natalie Cole - Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire
This is not a song I've ever looked for, but rather one that my mother was really fond of. Sometimes these things rub off on you. It's like Sir Cliffs - Mistletoe and Wine which I am shamefully admitting to liking too. We always heard these songs for Christmas.
7. MC Einar - Det' Jul Det' Cool (it's Christmas, it's cool)
This is a late 80s early 90s Danish Christmas classic. One that I started by thinking was fun, but now it really is kool. A little dated, but kool. It's not your typical romaticising Christmas, but rather dealing with all the over consumption and greed in a very smartly sarcastic way without alienating people. You may just think it sounds weird, and if I were in your place I would have to agree. I have a memory of sitting on the loo singing it on the top of my lungs once I was home alone, and the paperboy came and he yelled at me to shut the fuck up. Of course, at that point it was June.
8. Wham - Last Christmas
There simply is no Christmas without Wham Last Christmas. Everything from the song to the video just screams perfection. I can't hear it enough. It's another song that I've danced around in grey leggings and oversized red jumpers to.
9. Eartha Kitt - Santa Baby
Santa Baby has got to be the most covered Christmas song of all time. Everyone from Ally McBeal to Madonna, to The Pussycat Dolls and Taylor Swift have covered this track. Even Kylie made a delightfully sensual attempt (which I prefer to most of the other versions). Eartha Kitts version is still number one in my book. *PUUUUUUURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR*
10. Britney Spears - My Only Wish This Year
I know. I'm not proud, but I really do like this. I ended up buying a really bad Christmas album called Platinum Christmas back in 2000 because of this one song. I tell you, the rest of the tracks from S Club 7, Steps, Monica, TLC, R Kelly to name a few were absolute crap. This song made up for the $20 it cost. CDs were very expensive back then - and still are around here.
11. Mariah Carey - All I Want For Christmas
This is another song you just can't get around. The year it was released it was in the Danish top 10 through mid January. There was no denying it. Of course, I waited years until I bought the album. Mostly because I'm not a Mariah fan. Still, this is a delightful little holiday nugget. It's like the Pringles - once you pop you can't stop.
12. Various Danish Artists - Let Love Be Love
Probably one of the only good Danish holiday songs. This also did incredibly well on the Danish chart. It seems we (and by we, I mean everyone else) love our Danish artists. You may recognise SOAP who had that hit Soap is in the air. It's a little sappy, but that's the holidays, isn't it.
Because I'm really nice, I'll include some guilty pleasures as B-sides.
B-Side - Spice Girls - Sleigh Ride
There really are no words.
B-Side - Aqua - Spin Me a Christmas
If for nothing else, their videos are hilarious. This one too.
Until the Time Capsule works again, Merry Christmas my pretties.

Christmas: Attack of the sugar
I spent the day on the sofa, lounging about, drinking wine and eating chocolates while watching movies and the Disney Christmas Show at 4pm. A major tradition not to be missed. Frankly, it isn't Christmas without the Disney Christmas Show with the snowball fight, Mickey Mouse, the Chipmunks and Pluto and the fabulous clip from Lady and the Tramp. Oh how I adore those.
It wasn't all lounging about with chocolates and Italian wine. Work was involved as I had to put dinner on the table. Before dinner got on the table though, I had to set it.
Then the real work began as I prepared the duck (not a whole duck, mind) and put it in the oven.
Then as the duck was nearing the time to get out, I had to make the candied potatoes (brune kartofler in Danish) - a dish not to be missed out. Here is how it's done.
The recipe I've been told by a colleague calls for
100 gram of sugar
100 gram of butter
1 glass of potatoes
I used a tiny bit more sugar and less butter. Some make it etirely without the butter which I suppose gives a different consistency to the caramelly goodness that sticks to the potatoes.
One
Put sugar into pan, and set thermostat to maximum heat. Full steam ahead! Of course, you must watch the pan at all times.
Two
Once the sugar has melted and become a bit caramelly, you add the sugar and stir. Mix the sugary butter goodness until it's come together as a thick'ish caramelly lovelieness.
Three
Add the potatoes, and stir a lot. Make sure that all the potatoes are covered in the sugary butter goodness. You should now turn down the heat a few notches. How many I don't know - see step Five.
Four
Keep stirring, and turn the heat up a notch or two. Make sure to be by the pan at all times, as you don't want it burning and you don't want this
Five
Full heat is too much. Boiling sugar is dangerous - potato or no patato. It exploded all over the place and I had melted boiling sugar and buttery goodness in my face, hair, over my arms and all over my kitchen. Including my lovely (not quite a Smeg) fridge. Quite shocking to be honest, but I managed with some cold water and baby oil. Although my face does have a bit of evidence of the evening of wine and candied potatoes.
Food was set on the table, as While You Were Sleeping started on TV. Oh how I love that movie.
I loaded my plate with food, and then remembered that I forgot to make the sauce. Oh dear.
What can you do? I decided to skip the sauce, as I rarely eat sauce anyway.
After consuming enough food to feed a small African nation, it was time for the dessert. The Cheesecake. Mmmmmmm.
Ah, the lovelieness!
Then on to wine and chocolates
And presents!
Oh yes, let's see the loot!
I finished another few movies, polished off the chocolates and another bottle of wine and went to bed.
How was your Christmas m'dearies?

It's cooking time!
First of I just want to show you my fabulous marcipan treats, that I'm giving to my parents because I made the mistake of adding fruit flavoured stuff to it, and I simply can't keep it down.
It's just one of the jollies you get around the holidays.
Now on to what's really the matter. In Denmark we celebrate Christmas on the 24th because, we all know that's the correct day. We eat candy and other goodies all day long, watch TV, stress about the duck slowly roasting in the oven and guests start invading your home. The dinner at my parents house was the traditional roast duck, pork roast with cracklings, white potatoes, brown (or candied) potatoes and red cabbage. For dessert we always had ris a la mande or rice pudding with almonds topped with warm cherry sauce on top. Nobody can make that but your own mother. That's what they say, and my mothers is famous far and wide for being the best.
Why tamper with perfection? I won't be getting into that, when I'm celebrating Christmas in my own home this year. My parents are celebrating with evil bro and his spawn of satan this year. I like doing it alone, which is why I started my own traditions. This year I'm making Christmas cheesecake. How about that! There isn't much Christmas about it except it will be consumed at Christmas. This is how you do it - it's fairly easy!
You need what you see above
½ liter of cream (for whipping not beating, because it's eggs you beat)
200 gram of Digestive biscuits
125 gram of butter
200 gram of cream cheese (no added flavours or garlic cheesecake anyone?)
1 deciliter of icing sugar
1 tablespoon of vanilla sugar
One
Melt butter, and while that happens you bash the Digestive biscuits. I like to put them in a bag and bash them with a rolling pin while yelling "why are you home so late?" and "were you out having fun with the guys, I'll give you FUN!". You could also mix it up, or if you don't have a rolling pin, put them in a bag and slam it against the cupboards repeatedly while yelling "go back to that tramp again, you two-timing bastard!". Or you could go diva and scream "No wire hangers EVER!". I like that last one combined with the rolling pin.
Two
Mix the bashed Digestive biscuit into the butter and stir (simply just stir it Una) into the melted butter
Three
Put the bashed Digestive (now with the added glory of the butter) into one of those springform pans (the ones where the sides are detachable) and store in cool place until later
Four
Mix the cream cheese, vanilla sugar and icing sugar in a bowl. Come on everyone, say it with me - Your gravy is lumpy Pam, then simply just stir it Una! No lumps for us.
Five
Whip the cream - where's Indy when you need him! Unlike melting butter, I'm sure you all know how to make whipped cream. You cannot use the crap from the cans.
Six
Mix a bit of the whipped cream into the cream cheese mixture. Just whisk away, this is no time to be gentle. I'm from the Nigella style of cooking where we aren't too careful about licking or whipping.
Six - continued
Fold the rest of the whipped cream into the cream cheese mixture, first not so gentle, but then be more and more gentle as you add the rest. We want it to be light and airy. Like my brain when I see tinsel.
Uuuuuh! Tinsel!!
Um, where was I?
Oh yes!
Seven
Bring out the springform pan with the Digestive biscuit crust. It's cooled down a bit now. The task is now to add the cream cheesy whipped cream filling into the pan. Don't be too fussy about the look of it. It's not meant to be all neat. Make it rustic if you like.
Eight
Wrap it up, and put it in the fridge until tomorrow.
Ok, because I know you are curious, this is the rest of my fridge
Tomorrow before you consume it, you can decorate it. In the original recipe it says to add black currant jam and chopped pistachios. I however, have had much success adding French unsweetened black cherry jam on top.
My response to whatever you add?
Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn. I prefer it the way it was, without all the extras.

'Tis the Season
Now that's how I wanted to spend Christmas. Instead I had spent days getting ready for my parents arrival. Cleaning and baking and holiday shopping. I do love to shop, and impressing people with my wonderful skills in the arts of throwing a dinner party. The latter being the reason I took on this endeavour to begin with. It all went fine. My mother had her usual remarks and I fired back. I've learned from the best. At the end of the day I'm quite pleased as they have now been gone for about 26 hours and I've got a bit of a headache. After they left, my dear readers, I took a long hot shower and opened a nice bottle of Italian red wine and spent the day/night on the sofa. The sound of nothing is pure bliss.
In a previous post I wrote about the family traditions and as much as they were greatly appreciated when I was a child things change. As I fell out with my brother I made the decision to celebrate Christmas on my own, and have done it a few times. That's what I love the most. I like not having people dictating when you eat and all that. Just enjoying the day and going with the flow. Usually I would watch Christmas movies all day, only interrupted by the Disney Christmas Show at 4pm (that reminds me, I've got to watch Wall-E sometime - sooo cute!). Along with Christmas movies comes the Champagne and great food. It didn't have to be traditional Christmas food. The food could be Chateau briand or something wonderful like that. As long as it was a day of selfindulgence and joy. Plus I get along better with myself than any of my family anyway.
As it always is, this is a holiday of TV actors. I've seen Sabrina the Teenage Witch (Melissa Joan Hart) kidnap the sexy guy AC Slater from Saved by the Bell (Mario Lopez). Tim the Toolman Taylor from Tool Time (Tim Allen) succumbing to the Santa Clause and Woopi Goldberg (she had her own show and it tanked) doing the same thing as Tori 'bighead' Spelling and Patrick Stewart. Dylan McDermott of The Practice particiated to the Miracle on 34th Street. Lauren Graham of the fabulous Gilmore Girls had a Santa Clause fetish in Bad Santa and Jim Belushi Jingled All the Way. It seemed like Wallace Shawn is an important part of this holiday as he popped up in quite a few Christmas movies. He was a wizzard in Mr. St. Nick with Fraisers own Kelsey Grammar and in Karoll's Christmas he played opposite Verne Troyer and Larry Miller. It's TV actors ahoy this time of year.
The time, between Christmas and New Years is an odd one. It's really anything is it? It's not quiet New Years and Christmas is over. For me though, Christmas stays until the 31st and New Years takes over. So I'm keeping my holiday decorations up and although I don't have any more biscuits (those were sent home with my parents so they are probably in a bin at the closest rest stop on the motorway) my spirit of Christmas is up as well. So pop on that Christmas album and let's disco until New Years!

Christmas at the Cranks
In Denmark we celebrate Christmas on the 24th, on Christmas Eve and they have duck, pork loin with crackling, goose or turkey. We count down from Dec. 1st until the 24th. The 24th and the following two days are all national holidays. Not everything is closed though. It used to be that way but money talks and some people don't mind working at Christmas.
Our family has a very specific tradition when it comes to all things Christmas. The first weekend before December 1st my mother will decorate the house. The trees arrive and are decorated. We used to have a tree in the hall with lights and everything - the kids tree. My brother and I were in charge of decorating that one. The adults tree was decorated with lights and placed outside until December 23rd. My brothers also made Christmas hearts in colourful paper and these were collected and hung on a silver string over the massive windows in the living room. Everything had its place. The embroided advent calendar my mother made when she was expecting my oldest brother was hung by the fireplace. It has Disney characters on it.
On the advent calendar my mother hung 24 individual bags for my brother and I. The ones for Sundays were larger than the rest but the 24th was the biggest. We would look at those from day 1 until Christmas but we never touched them until the day. My mother always said she'd be able to tell if we did and would take the calendar away. In each bag was a little something, a tiny plastic toy or some kind of candy. It was such a lovely tradition.
The 23rd was special. My dad would arrive home late from work because he had to close down the bank branch and they were open late. So my mother would make a sort of rice porridge for dinner and we'd have sweet light Christmas beer for it. On top of the porrige we'd put a small lump of butter and put sugar and cinnamon on it too. In it would also be an almond and the one who got the almond got a small present. It could be anything from a bit of chocolate or a game that we'd play after dinner.
Before us kids went to bed, we put out rice porridge and Christmas beer for Santa (Julemanden in Danish). Then after we've gone off to bed my parents would decorate the adults tree with all these gorgeous Christmas decorations from my mothers mother and her mothers. We weren't allowed to see it until the morning of the 24th. After they were done they'd have smoked salmon before going to bed.
On the morning of the 24th I remember waking up before 9 and running into the living room to see the tree. Then getting the last bag of the advent calendar and check the fireplace to see if Santa had left something for me. Of course he had, and he'd also eaten a bit of the stale porridge. Bless. After checking the presents I would turn on the TV and watch a Christmas show called "While we wait" (Imens vi venter) which consisted of small Christmas cartoons and studio stuff with Christmas stuff galore.
Then my parents would get up and we'd sit down for breakfast until us kids were told to go tidy up our rooms. Then my mother would start preparing dinner as my father would start hoovering and cleaning the guest bathroom. After we were done with our chores, I'd sit down and watch the Christmas show again and my father would be sent out to get more cream. Why we never had cream on Christmas Eve I'll never know. Maybe my mother just wanted him out of the house so she could sneak a glass of wine.
At 4pm on the dot my drunken aunt would arrive and that was the time as the Disney Christmas show would start. We'd all (excluding my mother who was now having a meltdown in the kitchen) sit down and watch the Disney show. When that was done we (all except my drunken aunt and my brother) would rush off to church but would always end up standing up in the back of the packed church. At 6pm we'd sneak out and go finish preparing dinner.
At 7pm on the dot, dinner would be on the table. Dinner was always pork loin with crackling, roasted duck, red cabbage, potatoes, sauce, potatoes coated in caramel and crisps. For dessert we'd have rice porridge but this time with whipped cream and chopped almonds in it. There would also be one whole almond in it and the one who gets it wins a present. The present was always brought by my drunken aunt.
After dinner we would lay all the presents under the tree and leave the room. My mother would then light the candles on the tree. Then we'd all go back into the living room and oooh and aaah at how pretty it was. The humiliating part was next, and we would walk around the tree singing Christmas carols.
Five minutes later everyone was sick and tired of that and we would sit down and one of us would find presents for the other and we'd open them. After the presents were opened and everyone had thanked each other we would have coffee (some of them irish), hot chocolate, chocolates and biscuits. Then my aunt would leave and we'd all go to sleep.
On the 25th we had the family over for lunch and the same on the 26th. So much food and drinks. The kids playing with their presents or out in the snow in the garden.
This year is very different. As I type this my parents are on their way over to my place to celebrate Christmas. The first time in more than 40 years where my mother hasn't hosted. I have been baking, cleaning and shopping like a maniac and I've also been decorating for Christmas. It's been very busy at Sayhey and the next few days I probably won't be around so much.
All the traditions are out, and I'm starting new ones. I have been scaring my mother by telling her this is going to be a theme Christmas. Christmas under the palmes. Lots of coconut, seafood, colourful twinkle lights and Malibu rum. Still she hasn't cancelled. Bless. Then again she'll just have more ammunition to use against me some other time. Or this time.
Merry Christmas!

To bake or not to bake - that is a stupid question
There are a few things I must do before they arrive but so far at least the baking is done.
They still need the frosting and I'll be getting to that in a bit.
These are traditional Danish Christmas biscuits baked with white pepper.
These are gingerbread biscuits
Coconut macaroons with white and dark chocolate decoration (I don't really like them but my mother does)
Marcipan and nougat roulade and dark and white chocolate cornflakes treats.
Now excuse me, I have to go decorate the biscuits with frosting.

Then out of the blue comes Londons finest Tim and says he "I'm going to say the Wii game, because even though I hate High School Musical I'm hoping that if I win you'll throw a Wii in too." Does that mean you pick the High School Musical Wii game? Because there were two Wii games.
First of all I'm not throwing in a Wii. I've only got one of those but I will recommend everyone to go buy one because they are great. Please do, then we can play Mario Kart against each other.

So what now? Which one was it then? C or H? Was it the Wii dance game including the dance mat or the Doctor Who season 4 DVD?
It wasn't the Doctor Who DVD. It could have been, but I'm holding off until next year when the price goes below £45.
Do you all remember Tims very cryptic answer? Well he was somewhat right because it was a Wii game. It was
Since Tim was vague enough to not actually specify which Wii game it was and only stated that he hated High School Musical, I'm rewarding
Congratulations Tim. If you email me your address I'll send you a nice little gift to stick under the tree - from me to you.

Say(hey) cheese!
Forget classics like Christmas Vacation, Miracle on 34th Street, Jingle All The Way or It's a Wonderful Life. This movie, like so, so, soooooooooooooo many other movies used the story of A Christmas Carol by Dickens to entertain us. When I say us, I figure me and that other person who may have tuned in to watch it at 4pm on a Saturday. Introducing....
Because Hallmark cares about YOU!
Isn't it just wonderful, just when you think nobody cares about you anymore, someone at Hallmark digs out Tori Spellings old headshot and says "isn't it time we dragged this old bat out again?" or "I suppose we should throw her another bone, maybe she'll finally give up those hideous reality TV shows". Ah, it's Christmas. Love is in the air.
You may ask what the fabulous Bubba Shatner is doing in that movie. He plays Dr. Bob (and the spirit of Christmas present).
And Gary Coleman? The spirit of Christmas past obviously. Duh! But really, it's all about Tori Spelling (Carol) who is a bitch and then goes through the entire run of A Christmas Carol by Dickens. Until in the end she hooks up with her only true love (totally hot guy) and makes up with her sister. But not before throwing complete diva tantrums, making out with hot guy, holding Bubba Shatners suspenders and being locked into a coffin.
Tori says Merry Christmas (and go buy my movie) bitches!

Troy Boltons Christmas Surprise
I'm sure many a teenage boy or girl are looking very much forward to finding out what's behind door number 24.
