PeteUSA2009

I can't believe it's been that long since I last posted anything. July 26? Time flies. It's not that I've just been twiddling my thumbs all that time. I've been busy, honest. Strangely enough it's been one drama after another, so here goes..

First my wonderful Nintendo Wii broke. It didn't want to boot and I couldn't get the disc out so I had to turn it in. I can pick it up again on Monday. Before I got that text today, it hadn't been a super kool experience because the shop was totally without interest and compassion in my time of need.

Another major drama which has been going on for quite a while is that I'm travelling to the mighty US of A tomorrow with a Dullface (you know, my dull friend). Apparently we had and still have very different ideas about travelling and what comes with being away for so long (we arrive back home on August 31).
He genuinely thought I'd want to share room with him for all those days to save a bit of money. He then thought I'd think it was OK to not live at the same hotel, and he doesn't want to do anything that costs money. His idea of going to a restaurant is McDonalds. I find this out after we had booked the plane tickets because he actually thought that it was understood that everything was like that. Oh, and since he's already been to Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam he doesn't want to go there again so I can just do that on my own if I want to go. Like I said major drama.

That wasn't the end of the drama about project PeteUSA2009. We had planned to go see a baseball match - not that I have any interest in baseball whatsoever, but he thought it was part of the culture and that I had to see that. We'd made a deal, I'd go see a baseball match of his choice and he'd go with me to see the Fabutastic Bette Midler in Las Vegas. It's not that he doesn't have the money, but now he thinks it's too expensive so he has bailed on that. At least I still get to see Bette (alone yes, but nevertheless) and don't have to sit through a baseball match. The drama just kept going, and I've resigned to just say "oh well... it won't ruin my trip".

There was the matter of where we are going, which for the most part had been settled upon from day one. First stop, Las Vegas, then Los Angeles we are just landing there and renting a car before we are off to San Diego, then Los Angeles before driving up Highway 1 to San Francisco where I'll more than likely be partying in Castro. Then we had decided we'd want another stop before heading back home. He wanted Cincinatti because he has family there. I didn't want to go there because I would get nothing out of spending 3 days with his family. My choice would be New York where we could stroll up Broadway, look around Times Sq. and sail around the Ellis Island and visit the Statue of Liberty. A compromise was finally reached and I still feel like I lost big time. We are going to Chicago. All I know about Chicago is Oprah, it's windy and there is the Sears Tower. Oh, and Dullfaces family might make the trip to see him.

Anyway, the hotel decisions were the worst bit, and I almost ended up cutting my losses and saying I didn't want to go with him. Eventually we reached common ground - or as close as one can get while still feeling like one lost big time. We are staying at hotels with no less than 3 stars, and my hotel room in San Francisco has a bay view. Dullface's doesn't as he didn't want to spend the extra £30 per night.

Now I'm all packed because I am, afterall, leaving in the morning but I'm still missing a major thing. You see, I used my Visa card to pay for the hotels and I didn't know there is a limit to how much money you can use on a Visa over a 3o day period. My limit is spent, but I thought I'd be OK. Or so I was lead to believe by my bankperson. I had applied for a MasterCard and "it should arrive before you leave" I was told. No worries then, but the only problem is that it hasn't and I'm leaving before the post arrives tomorrow. Of course Dullface has received his, and he applied AFTER I did. It's so unfair. Anyway, for a while I was really losing all enthusiasm for the project but now I'm slowly regaining it. Maybe it had to do with the fact that I was out buying new - smaller sized trousers and shirts and new shoes to bring. I also bought a fabulous Bjorn Borg bag 20% off.

I also had my parents up for a dinner that involved Greek inspired potatoes with meatballs - also Greek and Tzatziki. Followed by a lovely homemade rich chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream and raspberry coulis. To go with coffee I had made a cherry cheesecake.

It all went off without any problems but since it was my first time making cheesecake I was mighty worried about how it would turn out.

Finally, last night I went to 'smukfest' aka. Skanderborg Festival close to where I live. I only went because Kylie was going and I could hook up with her as we are dear friends. We rarely get to see each other, so naturally I had to go and have a glass of Champagne with her. A good time was had with her and her show was great. She was engaging and managed to get the audience who to their shame didn't know many of her songs, into it. It was great, complete arms in the air moment. The stage was tiny so she could hardly even fit her band on there, let alone her 6 dancers. Apparently she couldn't even bring any of her lights and lamps with her. She managed great without them and the show was a very scaled down show compared to her X2008 tour. If you have a chance to go see her live, you should definately go. She's taking her For You, For Me tour to the US of A after I've come back home. We couldn't get our schedules to fit because we are both very busy and important people.

  2. Thanks for the tip!

It's greatly appreciated. If you have other tips please let me know. I'll be checking my blog frequently while in your fair county.

I'll be like a Japanese tourist with my camera. Embarrassing and very weird.

  3. If you EVER travel with Dullface again, I'm slapping BOTH of you.

Bette over baseball is my advice.

And to ease the pain of missing me, I've taped a photo of myself to the inside of your suitcase.

  4. I appreciate you slapping me if I ever do that again, thanks!

I'm slightly worried about your photo in my suitcase, maybe they won't let me in if they find it?

Can't wait to see Bette, I managed to secure a great seat

  5. Welcome to America!

You're going to have a blast! I've been to Las Vegas twice, and I regret not going to the Grand Canyon, as I've been in bordering Arizona 3 times! I wanted to see the Hoover Dam on the way to Vegas, but my friend, the driver, just pointed out the Dam as we drove over--she's a gambling addict.

Still, you can walk around Vegas, all the casinos have free shows to entertain you while you wait for the buffet, or big shows, or just taking a break from gambling and shopping.

The Bellagio fountains put on a delightful water display in the afternoon til midnight, about every half hour or so. It's fun to watch! Show up at least 20 minutes before the show starts to get a nice view, without anyone in front of you!

I miss the old pirate show at Treasure Island, but I hear the scantily dressed whores who took over as sirens are as entertaining as a cheesy, glittery Britney Spears video! I hear the remaining pirates are shirtless to go along with the more 'adult' Treasure Island. It'd be good for laughs. Go inside Treasure Island (TI) about half an hour to 45 minutes before the show starts, find the restaurant/coffee house that has the view of the show. There's an outdoors eating area right next to the water! You'll be able to drink coffee/hot chocolate and watch the show real close, without having to stand with the crowd on the sidewalk!

If you get tired of walking, there are all sorts of trams going all over the strip and into different hotels/casinos. Catch a ride on a few and avoid trying to cross the busy roads. Remember, the drinks are free if you're in the casino area, esp. playing the slot machines! The casinos at the Freemont Experience (old gambling strip) are housed under a spectacular light show, and the tables have a smaller minimum, so you can learn how to gamble without breaking the bank. Be prepared to see lots of tits (._)(_.) and strip joints! Enjoy the show! Such a shame you missed Celine, though ;)

I've not been to California in years, but I'll give you tips on Chicago next time!

Bon Voyage! Email me if you have any questions or concerns!

  6. Wow, dullface sounds like a complete arse! I say you just ditch him somewhere and have a Pete-tastic adventure on your own.

Have a great time either way, and I look forward to hearing about your trip when you get back!!

  10. Bingowings: I totally LOVE Vegas!

Grand Canyon was amazing and as was the Hoover Dam. Although I only saw that from the air.

Now I'm at the airport waiting to fly to the OC.

Tim: I'm having a Petetastic time! All glitter and discoballs!

    I feel bad for Dullface.

    Miss Scarlet: I wish!

    That would have been heaven.

Leah: uh uh uh sparkly socks!! Love it.

I'm having a petetastic time here so far, I'm just a little sad I won't be making it to your glorious city.

Beastie: I know! We went to a night club called Studio 54 inside the MGM Grand and while the music was slammin and the gogo girls and boys were strutting their stuff for all and sundry he just stood there like a stick in the mud for two hours with his Budweiser. It looked awkward. Bless him.

  12. Thank gods you're having a glitteringly fun time despite Dullface.
Such a shame your people & Kylie's people couldn't arrange a meeting in the USofA. Next time. eh?

Take care, 'Petra, and keep having fun!

  13. MJ: I am, now in San Diego. While the hotel (looks like a motel to me) is slightly dingy the weather is lovely and the staff friendly.

IDV: I will do all in my power to have just that.

It came down to when Min could get into the Palms and Hollywood Bowl and when my lovely colleagues could do without me for 4 weeks. Blasted timing! We'll hook up in London or Spain soon though I'm sure.

  14. CP, I'm glad to hear you're having such a fantastic time! That's so great you manage to enjoy yourself even if your travel buddy is a little downer.

Sorry for the long post, but I've got some helpful hints here to give you an idea of what you can enjoy during your vacation.

    California Attractions

I'm not sure if you've left San Diego yet, but if you plan on seeing some of the big attractions in Southern California, try this CityPass. It saves you a lot of money if you plan on visiting those attractions.

    Chicago Attractions

If you like zoos, Chicago has a great zoo, and it's free! The Lincoln Park Zoo is one of my favorite places to visit! If you can figure out the local transportation, you'll enjoy this zoo that's opened year round. Ask the locals/staff at the hotel and they'll give you great tips on how to get around. Here's the website for public transportation if you want to use it to get around the city--I ride the trains and take the buses a lot when I visit Chicago.

Save your money for the shopping!

You can also get a CityPass at Chicago, and I can honestly tell you that I've been to all those places on the list, except the Museum of Science and Industry and the John Hancock Observatory.

You'll enjoy the view from the Sears (now called Willis) Tower! An amazing view! If you can, try to see it during sunset, so you can see the amazing difference between a day view and a night view!

August 25th is next free day at the Field Museum, but if it doesn't work out, the CityPass is still a fantastic deal! I luved the Field Museum! I could spend days just exploring it! The Shedd Aquarium (dolphins and whales, and sea life, and great performing animals), the Field Museum, and the Adler Planetarium (fun science about space and stars) are all lakeside within a short walking distance of each other, right in Grant park! You'll luv it! Grant Park is where Pres Barack Obama gave his victory speech in 2008 historical Presidential Election.

The Art Institute of Chicago is just at the north end of the park, if you feel like taking a long stroll from the Field Museum. On Thursdays and Fridays from 5pm to 9 pm, the Art Institute of Chicago is free! So get a little culture and enjoy some masterpieces (American Gothic, some Georgia O'Keeffe, Edward Hopper, Diego Rivera, the famous Seurat pointillism painting, etc!) before going out on a night on the town.

  15. Sorry for the long post, but I want to make sure I give you some info that could help you enjoy your vacation more.

    Chicago Attractions cont'd

North of Grant Park is Navy Pier, a great place if you want to see rides and a carnival on the pier! They've got shopping and bike rentals and boat tours, restaurants etc. I've been there to celebrate New Year 2001, and it was awesome! Check out the free shows and fantastic fireworks!

Remember, save your money for the shopping.

    Chicago Shopping

Since I know you're a high end, designer chic kind of buyer, you're probably going to enjoy the Magnificent Mile!

(Check out the other great attractions listed on this site.)

At the Mag Mile, there's a lot of high end shops here, but you might find some great deals, or at least enjoy the views and window shopping. As you know, I'm very practical when it comes to shopping, so I'd recommend checking out the Water Tower Place Mall, where the prices are less than the designer shops and boutiques on the Mag Mile--you might find some great deals here, or at least have something to compare to the other shops.

    Chicago Cuisine

Chicago is famous for it's pizza, specifically deep dish pizza. I luv eating at Giordano's!
You could just ask the locals for a recommendation. I also enjoy the polish, which really just a huge hot dog served with potato wedges! Delicious!

    Chicago Clubbing

Well, I can't remember most of the clubs we went to (and some have closed since the last time I visited), but I think you might enjoy Hydrate. I used to have a guy friend who raved about it, but he has since moved to Florida.

Word on the street is it's a great dance club (Gay!) and be prepared for some groping, dancing, nudity and partying!

If I can think of any more tips to make your trip memorable, I'll let you know. Enjoy your vacation! Take lots of pics! Email me if you have any questions or concerns! Be Safe and Have Fun, CP!

  16. That sounds great! Thanks!

To my shame we actually went to the wrong mall in Vegas so we ended up outside Vegas -well almost- but the shops were quite good. At least some of them. At the Calvin Klein shop I bought a nice wallet for a bargain.

So I can actually recommend the Las Vegas Outlet Mall.

I will be shopping at Miracle Mile.

If you have any tips for San Francisco they will be greatly appreciated.

One thing I am wondering about though. Why the hell do you have so much water in the toilet?

    ReplyDelete
  17. CP, I'm glad to hear you're having a great time. Outlet Malls have the best deals when it comes to designer merchandise at low prices!

It's been years since I've been to San Francisco, and I haven't kept in touch with anyone out there in a while--most have moved elsewhere.

    San Francisco Attractions

It can get really cold in San Francisco, so take a jacket with you! Seriously, I remember freezing my a$$ off when I visited during summer!

There is a Citypass for San Francisco, and I like that you get a cruise and week long use of cable cars.

But I do remember some of the best things about the city were free!

Guess what? There are free walking tours of San Francisco! Local volunteers will give you a tour. Here's their great site with schedule and places they'll take you to see! Years ago, I had cousins who showed me around town, so the free walking tours is a great idea, and they seem to go to all the great places.

The Golden Gate Bridge is free! You can walk on it, or sit in the Golden Gate Park and take pictures of the bridge. Most of the park is free, unless you want to head into Muir Wood Monument or take the ferry to Alcatraz.

Better yet, head on out to Fort Point, which is in the Presidio right by the Golden Gate Bridge. It's a free site where you can see awesome views of the bay and bridge. The Presidio is where they trained military officers and translators, so you may see a lot of soldiers and sailors. Then again, it's California, so you'll likely see a lot of military fellas.

Since I'm such a big fan of nature and parks, the San Francisco Botanical Garden is another awesome place to visit.

Go visit Fisherman's Wharf! Yes, it's very touristy, but I luved the street performers and the atmosphere. I really liked it. They've got shops, restaurants, and you get to see the sea lions on pier 39. And you're also near Ghirardelli square, the chocolate place!

I also enjoyed walking around Chinatown during the day. Like Fisherman's wharf, you'll find some really unique shops and stores and restaurants. It was like being in a whole other world!

That's all I can remember right now. Of course, back then, I wasn't as aware of stuff. But I understand that the Castro district is the gay party district, so that might be fun to check out. My best advice is to just ask the locals. They'll know all the great places to go and have fun. If I can think of anything else, I'll let you know! Enjoy your California experience!

  18. P.S. Re: the American toilets have more water than European toilets because every thing's bigger in America--roads, bldgs, people ;)

Ok seriously, when they introduced the water efficient toilet over a decade ago, it was a disaster! They didn't work at all! Those things were so horrible that Americans have been mistrustful about water efficient toilets since. Although, slowly, we're adapting. We're actually using less water now, if you can believe it. Then again, we're behind on water and energy efficiency, but I think we're starting to change for the better.

  19. Be sure to pop into the San Francisco's historic movie palace, 'The Castro Theater' at 429 Castro Street.

AND they have an organist who performs live on a mighty Wurlitzer!

Check out the Castro Theater’s website for a listing of events, etc.

  20. Bingowings: Thanks for the tips! I may have a go at them and I hope Dullface will go for it too. He's (as you've probably gathered) a little strange.

I feel sorry for him because so far he hates LA. I love it here, I've seen so many movie/TV/Hollywood related things here and that's just me. He doesn't care so much about that, and all the while we were at the Hollywood Museum yesterday he was so annoyed. Apparently he doesn't care about the gorgeous dresses of Miss Marilyn herself. Go figure. The Walk of Fame was a huge disappointment to him because it was just stars with names on the sidewalk... Well duh! At least I'm having a great time.

As for the toilets, well it's just strange to have THAT much water floating around in there. Is it because Americans have larger poo than Europeans?

MJ: I was almost afraid to click the link thinking it was something really filthy. It looks nice and if I get time to myself I might go there.

Know any filthy adult theaters and rent boy districts? Perhaps MDP is in town?

  21. Make sure that you toss Dullface off of the Hoover Dam!
How on Earth did you ever get handcuffed to that stuffed shirt?
    What a drip :(

Apparently Chicago is quite awesome as at least one of my kids goes to Lollapallooza every Summer.

I've just been to Mount Rushmore..actually there are lots of other things to do around there..it's the heart of Cowboy Country where Dances With Wolves was filmed...it's full of Bikers and Cowboys parading about in their adorable little costumes.

I am hoping for a miracle to rescue you from Mr Drip.
In the true spirit of the 40th anniversary of Woodstock I will offer my favorite bit of advice:
    Life is a Garden..DIG IT!

  22. Dullface is so very much alive. They give you the electric chair for things like that over here don't they?

Electric chairs just don't go with my room, and neither does bars over the window.

I'm now in San Francisco feeling extremely tired. The view from my hotel room is awesome.

I heard that it's so boring down there in Mount Rushmore state that if they had a choice the presidents of yore would run away if they could. Is that wrong?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hey, I got a postcard! Thanks! Hope you're out having a lot of fun exploring the city!

  24. You are welcome!

I'm actually feeling a little under the weather so I've been spending a lot of time in my room looking out at the bay and Bay Bridge. I did take an almost 5 hr walk yesterday.
