Lovefilm

I've been really tired lately. I don't know what is wrong with me, but I have a sneaking suspicion that something is not what it should be. Anyway it's given me the time to spend a little time on the sofa watching movies. The first two are from the mailing service, which I'm still very much appreciating as I don't have to go somewhere by a certain time to deliver them back. I can drop them off in a mailbox whenever. Just whenever.

The first movie is Miss Potter starring Renée Zellweger, Ewan McGregor and Emily Watson. This is one of those movies I couldn't find anyone to watch it with. "But it looks so dull!" and other such rubbish excuses but their loss isn't it? Well that's actually not entirely true. At sometime I was in London with a friend and they were showing it but we decided we'd wait until we got back because we'd already spent a fortune that day.

Well the movie is about Beatrix Potter (I had no idea this was based on a real story and had never heard the name before) who is slightly eccentric (she had money) and makes drawings of Peter Rabbit and such. Then one day she gets published and her life changes forever.
I liked it a lot. It was sweet and sad and a really enjoyable film. Still it isn't exactly a hardcore action movie. I'd compare the pace to that of Ladies in Lavender.

The next movie was Southland Tales starring Dwayne Johnson, Sean William Scott, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Christopher Lambert (I call him Christopher Slambert, I don't know why) Jeaneane Garofalo, Jon Lovitz, Bai Ling, Miranda Richardson, Wallace Shaw (you remember him from Clueless - As if!), Justin Timberlake and Kevin Smith.

I was warned about this. My friend said I wouldn't like it, he said it was odd and not very good. Of course I took it as a dare. Plus with a lineup like that how could there not be something good about it? (I had forgotten the valuable lesson I had made about 10 years ago watching Very Bad Things) So I had to watch it. It was a must. Sarah Michelle Gellar is always good and I have to say I totally digged the Teen Hornieness song and could remember it for a long time. Alas it has faded away.

After what I thought was a good hour of watching I made the mistake of checking how long there was left of it. Only half an hour had passed and there was still a good 1 hour and 45 minutes left. It was going to be a long one. Even though it was bad, and by bad I mean really really really bad. And weird. I still felt I needed to watch it to the end but once it finished I was very happy. I can now say I have successfully watched Southland Tales and I didn't fall asleep at all. Which is quite a feat.

A long time ago I bought a magazine, you know one of those awful weekly womens magazines. Just a Danish varitety. They had different movies with it every week and I didn't even look when I took it off the shelves because £3 including a DVD was pretty cheap by our standards. To my horror it was The Family Stone starring one of my least favorite actors Sarah Jessica Parker. Well I'd seen it before, although I can't remember why or when. I decided to watch it because it's been a while and I think I'm in a Diane Keaton phase. Please help me!

Still I ended up really liking it. The cast, well apart from the worlds most unsexy woman (or horse - Camilla watch out!) is pretty good. The story is good, it was just too bad that it was hyped as a sort of happy holiday movie with a few laughs. I mean anyone with any sense of taste, loves to watch people being mean to Sarah Jessica Parker, not just around Christmas. But actually it's a quite sad movie. Despite the rolling around the floor in egg and such.

I can't believe I like a movie with Sarah Jessica Parker. Bugger.

  1. If I remember correctly, Sarah Jessica Parker was like, my least favourite part of that movie. Whatever happened to Rachel McAdams?

I love Clueless. I just watched it not that long ago.

I probably won't watch Miss Potter because I really can't stand Renee Zellweger. But it sounds not bad.

  2. You are right, Sarah Jessica Parker is so annoying. I know the little cough fits are supposed to be funny but they are just annoying.

Apparently Rachel McAdams took a break for a few years but is working again.

    Clueless is awesome!

I adore Renée Zellweger. She's really making the most of her British accent having done two Bridget Jones movies. There is something likable about her I think. Plus she wears Carolina Herrera very well.

  3. I really wanted to see Southland Tales, then I heard so many bad things about it. I don't know whether to bother or not…

Sarah Jessica Parker? Why the long face?!

  4. I only wanted to see Southland Tales for one thing: Seann William Scott.
However, I don't think even he can tempt me after all the bad reviews it got.

I really liked The Family Stone, despite SJP. In fact, I would go as far as to say that her character, while irritating, did manage to redeem her somewhat, in my eyes.

I can feel a Clueless viewing coming on!

  5. OK, I saw Miss Potter on the weekend too - and loved it! Really sweet, wasn't it?

"Teen horniness is not a crime.
    Open your heart
    and your mind"

something something something about squares not being horny.

Guys, I read the reviews for Southland Tales, but still dug the hell out of it. It's just that's it's so... impenetrable on the first viewing. I was all confused, but in a good way. Then I read the comics and some more about the subject matter and it sort of made sense.

I have a fan girl crush on the director. No, I am not an emo or goth.

  6. CP, hope you're feeling better. At least you spent your time relaxing!

  7. I saw Christopher Slambert on Spanish telly last night - advertising cars.
And they didn't even use his name - so it looks as though he really needs the money.

I'll give that last one a try - I love Diane Keaton.
    Remember her in The Godfather?

Hope you're soon feeling yourself again - so to speak.

  8. Tim: Hah!

Well you liked Lucky Number Slevin, so maybe Southland Tales is one for you?

IDV: He is quite nice to look at. Also in Southland Tales.

You can't be serious about SJP though. Really? Hating her still works for me.

I don't have Clueless. I should get that.

T-Birdy: What a coincident. It is really sweet!

Loved the song! Did you look it up or do you just remember it?

How about the movie, did you actually watch it TWICE? Or would you?

    Bingowings: Thank you dear.

    I hope I will. Soon.

KAZ: Now that's a downfall of proportion if he's peddling cars on Spanish tv. Is it SEAT by any chance? Does he speak Spanish?

Can't say I remember her in the Godfather. It's been a while since I watched it.

I make it my point to *feel* myself every day

  9. Is it true that SJP had her mole removed?

  10. I read that story thinking it would be something she'd do. She's just dumb enough to do it. Just look at Jennifer something from Dirty Dancing who nobody recognises today - because she had her nose fixed.

Remove the one thing that makes her unique. I hope not for her sake, but it would be lovely if we never see SJP again.

  11. * keels over in shock at the revelation that CyberPetra - pretty much gayest of the gay - doesn't have Clueless *

  12. Sorry, I had it on VHS though.

I gave it to someone when I moved as I didn't want to carry all those tapes around.

I don't have the Prisilla Queen of the Desert either. Or To Wong Fu Thanks for Everything Julie Newmar for that matter. I had The Birdcage on VHS though but again - no DVD.

Oh and now I'm just mentioning gay movies I don't have. Ok, gay movie I have? The Fluffer (not porn) - doesn't get more gay than that I suppose.

  13. I also have My Own Private Idaho - so I can hold my own even without Clueless.

  14. MJ, I think the mole had Sarah Jessica Parker removed.

  15. I highly recommend Center Stage as the gayest non-gay film (or non-gayest gay film?) It takes place at a ballet academy, features real life gay ballet dancers, and yet there's only one gay character. He loves Oprah. The guys do dance around together a lot, though.

  16. Tim: I wouldn't hold it against um it.

Dinah: Lovely! I was going to add it to my wishlist but they don't have it.

In fact they don't have much gay themed material which is quite a shame.

  17. I love the name Beatrix Potter. Sounds like an aunt of Harry Potter, actually.

Anyway, I remember reading about Peter Rabbit and enjoying the illustrations when I was a kid.

  18. Tara: You know, there is a Beatrix in Harry Potter. Her name is just Beatrix Lestrange or something and she's quite evil.
