The Danes sail back in to try and fix the the mast but it's hopeless
The Danes fighting for their medal in the Croatian boat
The Danes having a bit of trouble on the way much like the other boats
The sea around Beijing was not behaving itself as the Danes fought their way past the other boats
After getting back on land official protests were issued by amongst others, the Spanish team (who, if Denmark was disqualified would win the Gold) and the Danish team themselves. Other teams also issued protests.
The protests by all teams including the Danes were that the weather conditions were too horrid and that the medal race should be sailed again in the morning. This protest was refused by the committee along with a few other protests about the Danes leaving the start line too late. Now, we are waiting for the Spanish protest to be solved.
The Spanish team protested the Danes use of the Croatian 49'er. It has never happened before ever, that a team has sailed in a boat that did not officially belong to the nation sailing it. Normally in these cases a "measure man" would have to go and evaluate the boat to see if it was fit to sail but this didn't happen because there was no time for that. The "measure man" has afterwards checked the Croatian boat which was alright. Still there are also the issues that the Danish team did not fly the Danish flag and there was no camera in the boat as that had been removed after the race yesterday. The committee was going to rule on it today but the decision has been postponed until Monday (tomorrow).
If the Danes are disqualified from the race they will be 4th. Which is the worst placement in the Games.
However, in this major drama we forget all about the reason why the Danes still have a shot in hell to get the gold. The CROATIAN team and their incredible sportsmanship. They should get an award for that. Like at beauty pagents there is the Miss Congeniality award. There should be the same at the Olympics because what they did was just amazingly generous. I love Croatia!
What Petar Cupac and Pavle Kostov did was just so nice and I can't do this post without a shout out to my Croatian Homies!
Here's the intrepid Viking spirit! I hope they keep their gold! Now, that's an Olympics story.
ReplyDeleteIf they take their gold, then dammit, the Dane teams should pillage the medals and burn the podium!
I'm surprised the Spaniards even sailed...especially considering their Armada fiasco...
I know! It's an amazing Olypics story. It's certainly one for the books.
ReplyDeleteActually I'm quite ok with it if they take the medals. It will be sad because they certainly deserved them, and then some. Still rules are rules and they have to be upheld above all.
Well, the Spaniards did make it all the way to America didn't they? I wonder how many penalty points Christopher Columbus got back then.
Wow, what a crappy mast. But good on the Croatians!
ReplyDeleteI know! They are so lovely and we owe them everything.
ReplyDeleteI hope the protests do not hold up. If the best team won, then they should not lose on technicalities.
ReplyDeleteThere is a sportsmanship awards that can be given by the IOC. It is the Pierre de Coubertin medal and there have only been a dozen awarded in total including Canadian sailor Lawrence Lemieux who quit a race to rescue two other capsized sailors.
I quite like that Croatian guy on the right. Good sportsmanship just makes people so much hotter.
ReplyDeleteIt's always fun to have a little drama at the Olympics, but I can't imagine what it must be like for the athletes.
I want to see the 69ers.
ReplyDeleteCP, it's official! Jonas Warrer and Martin Kirketerp Ibsen keep their gold! And the Danes add another gold to their medal count! Congratulations! This is definitely a great Olympic story!
ReplyDeleteOh, good for them. And for the Croatians. Good for everyone!
ReplyDeleteTrooper Thorn: Welcome!
ReplyDeleteTrue, and apparently in sailing there is great sportmans ship.
I do hope the Croatian team wins that award. I would vote for that - along with every other Dane and Hungarian I'm sure.
Dinah: Apparently it was "inhuman". That was how one of the Danes described it.
He sure does. Especially after what he did!
MJ: You and me both!
Where's the Tim and Bingowings action when you need it
Bingowings: YAY! I saw it just before I left for work but didn't have time to update.
Dinah: Exactly, good for everyone!
Including the Spanish. We'd probably have done the same if it had been the other way around. You never know.
Most importantly I'm sure we would have done the same to the Croatians. I love the Croatians.
Excellent , high drama indeed .Hurrah for the croatians and well done to the majestic Danes for fighting their way thru to gold (even if it is taken away) they were the true winners :-)

ReplyDeleteBeastie: I know, fabulous!
ReplyDeleteWe got to keep the gold too. Which we deserved, as we clearly were the best sailing team in this Olympics.
Congrats on Ainsleys win, he is a sailing god (apparently, I'm learning so much about sailing it's insane). You'd think I was working in the maritime field *winks*
Comment deleted: Really? Why?
*grins*
Sorry I'm on a high after we just won the Mens Handball match against the Germans.
I was just wondering who the powers in handball are!
ReplyDeleteThe Danish?
ReplyDeleteTee-hee!
Well actually in mens handball I have no clue.
We we've won quite a few times in womens handball but alas they didn't qualify this year.
